Promotional Tools for Acts on RipStar Bills

Besides having ticket options, phone trees, ads in papers, thousands of flyers and business cards, e-mail list, posting on boards, radion stations, call in requests, fan based direct actions, free for B-days in the month of the show, internal network invites, blind recruitment efforts from you guys and on our end, sponsor and product approaches, and so on......we are re-establishing the VIP list carefully to ensure we only add people likely to return to future events. Most of the people on the list are industry people and volunteers with a consistent history of helping us get the word out. Thanks in advance for alerting your communities that we do have volunteer opportunities available. Thanks again for playing with us. See you at the show!

P.S. Artists songs on our bills get rotated throught this profile. We will be selecting 3 songs this year to be sponsored on the compilation. Paid spots are avaialable for a limited time are are filled on an invitation only request from us. If you really want you song on our compilation you should send fans to add with us as friends and they should be directed by you when to send their comments. The songs with the most comments will be candidates for the 3 spots and the decision will be made by a voting process that will strongly consider the quality of the comments and the song itself. Good Luck.

USE THIS COMBINED WITH PRIORITY CONTACTS IN THE GUIDE

All bands are instructed to draft a single page press release....usually 2 para works. Cover who what where when and why and how....not only do we need to psych ourselves out in a positive realistic way we need to share this enthusiasm with readers, fans, media much in the same way we do live on stage. However, there is a fine line between being overly self centered and putting something out in print that will get attention. Use PR news...there is a free option use that it works! Use a this or a variation of it....

HIPPIE GRENADE CD Release Party at RipStar's "BANDS THAT ROCK" CONCERT SERIES

Saturday, June 9th @ 8:00 p.m.; $10 EL RINCON (2700 16TH St. @ Harrison)

Hippie Grenade, The French Thinkers, Full on Flyhead, Drink & Food, Deborah Crooks, Broken Ladder and  Hosted by Comedian Dave McRae!

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Hippie Grenade and RipStar Productions have teamed up to celebrate the release of the band's first full-length album, Fix the Roof, as part of Rob Jackson's "Bands That Rock" concert series.  The show will take place in San Francisco's sunny Mission District at El Rincon (2700 16th Street) on Saturday, June 9th at 8:00 p.m., and will feature stellar Bay Area acts Full on Flyhead, The French Thinkers, Deborah Crooks, Broken Ladder, Drink & Food in addition to Hippie Grenade.  Visual artists Pegasus Fading and Tweakfest will also be lending their talent to this event, shooting a hole in the theory that in today's economy ten dollars won't get you very far!

The genre-bending, San Francisco-based Hippie Grenade successfully blends roots and contemporary music with a refreshing jazz-sensibility that is truly unique, drawing upon musical influences as varied as Stevie Wonder, Soundgarden, and the Grateful Dead.  Singer Bhi Bhiman's powerful, soulful vocals and a blistering rhythm section create what the San Francisco Bay Guardian called a "startlingly epic" live show.  Hippie Grenade's impressive debut album Fix the Roof showcases their musical ability and versatility, and will be available for the first time at the show on June 9th.

This will be a truly special night for Hippie Grenade.  Fix the Roof was a long time in the making, and the band is very excited to finally share it with their friends and fans as well as the greater Bay Area music scene.  Music has the power to uplift, unite, and provoke positive societal change by building a vibrant, functional community, so please come out on June 9th to celebrate some of the best acts the Bay Area has to offer!

OMNESIA headlines RipStar's "BANDS THAT ROCK" date time location+ bands playing....

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Bay Area indie band Omnesia headlines RipStar's "Bands That Rock" Concert Series .....Date location

"Having just released our debut Omnesia CD, we're excited to be onstage with Project Greenfield, Binky and The Dualies," said singer Enmei47. "Rob Jackson and RipStar have a history of booking great local bands and national acts, but RipStar deserves a lot of credit for giving new bands a comprehensive and innovative crash course on what it really takes to for them to properly promote shows. And he works like a madman to promote his concert series. Promoters like Rob are much the same as San Francisco chefs. They work ridiculous hours, and risk financial ruin because they love what they do. It's often a vow of poverty but promoters do it for the same reason that chefs do it – they love a room with a great buzz." "It's a competitive music scene here," emphasized Omnesia guitarist, M2. "There are a ton of new and good bands coming up locally that are competing for the same clubs and same audiences. They think that if they have a great CD, a tight band, a cool Myspace site, and some flyers going up that people other than their friends, relatives and co-workers will magically start appearing at shows. We'd all like to think our songs shine a magic beacon across the club scene, but it doesn't work that way. You have to reach out to thousands of people to make one local show a success." Rob Jackson doesn't mince words when he indoctrinates new bands on how to reach musical orbital velocity. "Reaching out to thousands is a tough challenge and since this is the brutal reality for most bands, it is easy to understand why they burn out and stop trying," admits Jackson. "However, when promotions extend to phone trees and efforts to get new people exposed to your band are maximized there is often a buzz and sometimes it catches on like fire and a song or two gets spun, bands chart and people come out. The live band leadership skills are really important - that passion often provides the motivation to do bring the full package."

M2 says it's always a wake-up call when new bands realize that musical success involves doing 50 other things that aren't remotely musical, "Crossing the chasm from startup band to a hot ticket takes a tremendous amount of time and relentless effort on all fronts. For a lot of bands, it's a bit of shock when RipStar hands you their tough love A to Z promotions bible and you realize how much DIY grassroots marketing is involved to make the show a success for everyone involved. Great bands need to promote as well as they write music; they can sleep when they are dead."

About you band

example...X is a dark high energy indie rock band from San Francisco, CA. Big sound, big beat, laced with synths and things that go bump in the night smeared with lipstick....

Omnesia's gender-bending singer is Enmei47 - a powerful and provocative theatrical performer and songwriter - dripping with mystery, darkness and passion.

E47 has been described as the lovechild of Siouxie and Marilyn Manson; a distinctive voice that evokes facets of PJ Harvey, Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Linda Perry, Peter Gabriel, Nina Hagen and Robert Plant.

Omnesia is composed of six musicians who have toured locally, nationally and overseas in other acts to audiences as large as 20,000 - that have include Vicious Rumors, Damage, Mickey Thomas' Starship, Aaron Pearson, Fiction, and Great Beast. Band members have shared concert lineups with Linda Perry, The Brown Fellinis, Testament, and The Servants.

Omnesia's debut CD was recorded, engineered and produced by Jim Juhn, who has toured, recorded and composed with ex-members of King Crimson. The Omnesia CD is available on Kunaki, CD Baby and iTunes.

We encourage you to reach by voice and face to face as many as you can (think 10% net).

One of the most under utilized promotions tools we have available for bands to tap is Free for Birthdays....you can find b-day people on myspace to invite and also just post CL and other sites. Shows that get a couple b-day parties always fill up nicely.

If you guys mail out the press kits and get fans mobilized to call and request a song and ask DJ's to plug the show this usually gets the show announced. Flyers will be available at the venue 2700 16th @ Harrison for your pick up. You are asked to dispatch someone to help get a few out, but flyers are found to be helpful reminders to existing fans mainly. Music events and music stores are good spots to hit.

One of the best methods of getting the place full is to find a company to sponsor the show and give yourself a healthy guestlist and tell everyone this is an important industry showcase and it is essential you pull out a reasonable number of people for the night and to please rsvp for the spot. This usually helps get some flakes off the usual list and it helps you increase the draw. Warning you need extra time to set this up, sometimes six months in advance!

Many stations KFoG, Live 105 have local music showcases and interview times to set up if you have someone with magetic personality in the band. I can coach on media relations/ have some experience in addition to multiple degrees. For less established bands, shows are like job applications, you don't just send your resume and wait for a call back. You gotta follow up on the faxes, letters, e-mail invites, calls w/left messages. There are a ton of applicants 5,000 bands estimated in the city and just convincing someone of influence to listen to your music is a task sometimes. There are techniques to use to lessen the sting and keep the professional distance from assholes that answer the phone, but seem to get a kick out of being rude pricks to people they
